THE UNHOLY MADONNA.
Creative Tech Final
This is my first ever collection completely sewn and designed by me. Taking inspiration from religious symbolism and the church, these garments are designed to be contrary to what is acceptable in the religious space.
I found myself watching the show Pose at the start of second semester. A must watch if you have not seen. Growing up in the church and being queer, I personally do not agree with the statement “Marriage is between one man and one woman”. One of the first few scenes in Pose is of Damon, a main character, getting abused and kicked out of his religious parents household for being gay. I simply cannot even imagine this, as I have grown up and only lived in cities that are accepting of who you are- no matter what you look like or identify as. I found myself questioning why the Church is against same-sex marriage and transexuals. Being surrounded by many beautiful queer individuals that inspire me on a daily, I wanted to create something powerful.
Each garment is sexy and revealing in a sense. Note the hood on garments being reflective of a veil or reflective of a nun. Additionally the use of religious symbolism such as the cross throughout the collection. 8 head to toe looks. One of my favorite projects I have worked on, as it hits close to home.
Note that this is not meant to be a diss at the church for those who practice religion. Simply a collection to question some values of the church with these modern times
