Shattered Innocence
Design Studio and Technical Construction Final
“And see the place where you used to live, When you were young”. drawing inspiration from music, “When You Were Young”, by the Killers, is an American classic that everyone can relate to in one way or another; tackling the concepts of purity, heartache, & reminiscence. This collection is dedicated to the nostalgic feeling of growing older and yearning for the days when one was living a carefree lifestyle in much simpler times. As life passes us by, we get emerged in the moment without realizing how much time has actually left us. In the blink of an eye, moments become distant memories. Life is not as perfect as we imagined when we were young.
My designs are a visual representation of the loss of innocence. We crave to go back to being naive, but in reality we have experienced too much in life to go back to this state of being. The use of sheer textiles and high neck finishes portray this concept. The bubble, gathered whimsical garments are meant to reflect ones playful side- although we have grown older, deep down we are still that same child. Several garments include asymmetrical hems, reflecting the concept of our childhood decaying, as well as visible embroidered stitching, symbolizing the attempt to mend losses from heartbreak. We continue to grow and change through the heartache. Despite our childhood slipping away from us, our sense of youth remains within.
Mosaic double canvas artwork inspired by the creases in the leather belt and corset. I thrifted dishwater such as mugs, plates, and bowls and broke them to get these abstracted pieces. Mastic, Grout, and Tile on wooden canvases.
