Arianna Martin is based in New York City and Columbus, Ohio. Currently attending Parsons The New School studying fashion design, Arianna is developing her brand and taking it to the next level through exploration and process.

Currently going into my senior year of college, I found myself interested in the collection pathway of fashion design. Collection is the design process of creating a set of looks that flow together.

ARIANNA MARTIN

For my brand, I decided to go by my full name, Arianna Martin. The name Arianna comes from my Italian ancestry. Being half Italian, I love diving deeper into that part of me. Additionally, taking note from religious references and aspects, as I have grown up Catholic. I often find inspiration from my family’s history.

SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainability is a huge part of what makes my brand me. There are so many environment damaging brands out there that are deteriorating our world everyday. When designing, I enjoy using everyday objects and creating art out of them. Additionally, I tend to use fabric that has been sent to thrift stores or places such as FabScrap. I often epicycle the clothes I already have and create new textiles using these old garments.

AESTHETIC

My Aesthetic is sleek, sexy, punk, and a bit of rock. I love drawing silhouettes that flow, and create movement when one wears the garment. I am not afraid to show skin, and stand with the body positivity movement. My goal is to create for confidence. I love using black textiles and denim, as I find it enchanting. A lot of my design comes from my personal sense of style.

INSPIRATION

I find inspiration all around me on a daily basis. Walking the streets of New York City, you really see it all- the good, the bad, the crazy, the sane, the creative, the corporate. I enjoy taking inspiration from my hobbies and day to day life being a busy fashionista. Nightlife is one of my favorite parts about the city, getting to meet, network, and see some of the most fabulous people with absurdly impeccable and unique style. Old New York and nightlife is a big contribution to my designs. Additionally, I take inspiration from Madonna, one of my favorite fashion icons who changed what fashion is. I find that my personal sense of style reflects her power and beauty.

PROCESS

When designing, I start with an idea. I constantly carry a sketchbook on me, and if I do not have one on strap, I immediately head to my notes app. When inspiration hits, I always want to make note. When determining looks, I think about silhouette, what works and what doesn’t. I also try to design for any body type, ensuring everyone will look good and feel good in what I design.

When sewing, I start with a pattern or drape. Personally, I enjoy draping because I find it allows me to explore concepts more when I visual see the fabric on the body.
